Are you a clean freak? Then Canada’s Calgary may be the place for you…or perhaps Honolulu.
A global survey, released in April 2007, named Calgary the cleanest and most sanitary city in the world out of the 215 cities it examined.
Just behind Calgary are Honolulu, Hawaii; Helsinki, Finland; Ottawa, Canada; and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Cities on the bottom of the sanitary rankings list include Dhaka, Bangladesh; Antananarivo, Madagascar and Port Au Prince, Haiti.
The study, conducted by Mercer Human Resources Consulting, took into account criteria such as air quality, water quality, transportation infrastructure, logistical infrastructure, clean energy generation, waste control, recycling and a range of levels of infrastructure reorganization.
Scores are also based on the quality and availability of hospital and medical supplies and levels of air pollution and infectious diseases.
In addition, "the efficiency of waste removal and sewage systems, water potability and the presence of harmful animals and insects” were also factored into the survey.
The top ranking cities most commonly shared superior marks for their high tech infrastructures, public transportation, education, and as excellent centres for national and international companies.
Mercer conducts the survey, in part, to assist companies which manage international workforces decide on such issues as expatriate remuneration packages.
At the top of the Western Europe cities surveyed are Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm and Zurich. London ranked 63rd on the overall list.
Among Eastern European cities, the best-ranked location is Prague in the Czech Republic. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the highest scoring Middle Eastern cities.
